the power of social media

There have been a few times recently when I have been astounded at the sheer power of social media and how integral and useful it now is in our lives. As well as being great for creative businesses from a marketing point of view I have also found it really useful whenever I’ve needed help with problem solving. I sometimes wonder what we did before Facebook, twitter and all the rest of them came along…

I’ll give you an example of one of the ways it has worked for me recently. A few months ago when I was really struggling to sort out my website I posted on Facebook asking whether anyone had any experience with WordPress and e-commerce, as I was finding the challenge of tackling my new website a real pain in the ass. It was causing me hours of frustration and in the end I knew I needed help from someone who knew what the heck they were doing. A few hours later I got a lovely message from someone saying that her mum had seen my post and forwarded my info to her. She was a web designer specialising in….. you guessed it….. WordPress and e-commerce!! We have now started  with together and she has been an absolute godsend, exactly what I needed and when I needed it!! This has had the dual benefit of bringing in new business to one party and solving a time-consuming problem for the other. I’ve also found help with recommendations for printers, suppliers and other resources.

Another time it has worked out well for me was way back when I was researching getting my designs onto ceramics and I needed a bit of help with working out which designs worked best. I used social media as a free market research tool and asked my followers, friends and ‘likers’ to tell me which design they preferred, helping me out with my research in exchange for the chance to win a print. As you can see here engagement was high and I got an amazing response, which helped me out, informed which design I would choose to put onto my ceramic range and one of my lovely commenters won a print!! Everyone’s happy. I’ve tried this on other occasions too and have been bowled over by the results.

So if you are running a small business and you aren’t active on social media platforms I’d seriously recommend getting involved. The benefits a little bit of initial effort and a continued presence fostering your online relationships could have for you could amaze you.
